Exploration of Genre

Image
My chosen genre is Contemporary R&B as I think there is more diversity within this genre as opposed to 'regular' R&B. Contemporary R&B is essentially a fusion of different different genres such as Pop, Soul, Hip-Hop and Electronica with R&B Artists featured: BTS, Taemin, Drake, Bryson Tiller, SZA, The Weeknd, Billie Eilish, blackbear, Tory Lanez and Chase Atlantic These artists share both similarities and differences in the sound of their music, however, they generally fall under the category of (Contemporary) R&B. They are also artists that are popular with 14-18 year olds - my target audience for example. I think that people will find a few of these artists appealing due to their style of music and often interesting lyrics. I plan to take different elements of these artists' style, music and personality and integrate them into my own artist. As well as exploring the artists within the genre, I must also explore the sound of...

Research Rationale

Through variations of extensive research, I plan to create a music magazine with a target audience aged 14 to 18. As a Year 11 student, I have access to those whose age ranges from 11 to 16 and also sixth form students with an age range of 16 to 18. This will allow me to collect a wide variety of opinions which will give me a basic idea of my target audience's preferences. For my general audience research, I plan to conduct a survey and for my focused audience research, I plan to conduct a focus group or several individual interviews. The online survey I plan to create for my general research will be sent to several contacts within my targeted age group and will feature questions from genre preference to magazine layouts and colour schemes. These questions will be multiple choice giving me insight into my audience's general preferences and interests.  A focus group or individual interviews, for my focused research, will allow me to integrate the opinions of my targ...

Music Magazine Collage

Image
Despite their different genres, these magazines have several similarities and follow similar conventions. For example, they all have an angle of gaze as all of the artists are looking directly into the camera. Acclaim, Billboard and the two NME magazines have little writing and graphics on them giving them a simplistic layout. These types of front covers appeal more to me in comparison to covers like the Q magazine which is cluttered with cover lines. Wonderland gives off a playful vibe as there are graphics and the fonts have a graffiti effect and are all different from one another. The pose of the models in Acclaim and Wonderland appeal to be most as I feel as though their angle of gaze is somewhat stronger and darker than the others which I feel would intrigue the audience. I plan to combine - and tweak - different elements of these magazines in order to construct my own.

Exploring Music Magazine Typography

Image
The Kerrang masthead is black which connotes seriousness and something that has solemn and dark attributes to it. The capitalised font (along with the exclamation mark)  make it seem as though the word is being shouted which reflects their rock and metal genre as rock music is often labelled as loud, aggressive and chaotic. On the masthead, there are white lines which mimic the appearance of a shattered mirror signifying the fact that not only does the magazine break conventions, but it also doesn't pay mind to it's appearance or how it viewed by others. Billboard uses a sans-serif black font which has red, yellow and blue circles within the letters. This gives the magazine a more modern and artistic feel to it as opposed to Q or the 'Rolling Stone' which appear more vintage and serious. The colours reflect the pop genre of the magazine and as they are the primary colours, it provides the magazine with an air of importance as it implies that the...

Music Magazine Deconstructions

Image
As a part of my research into music magazines, I must explore the different elements  and conventions of a music magazine in order to understand why and how certain aspects of mise-en-scene reflect a magazine's target audience. Here, I have deconstructed an issue of 'Rolling Stone' magazine and an issue of 'Uncut' magazine.

Brief Outline

For my brief, I’ve been tasked with conducting research and producing the front cover of an original music magazine along with a double page spread featuring the artist. During the prelim, I learned how to use Adobe Photoshop to construct my fashion magazine and I enjoyed using the program therefore I am excited to use it for this magazine. I’m also looking forward to developing my Photoshop skills, specifically when it comes to editing the main image and manipulating other aspects of the magazine. In my opinion, there is a greater diversity within music magazines as opposed to fashion magazines thus I think there will be a far more interesting variety of real products to use as prompts and inspiration when I am conducting my research. As this NEA is a time-sensitive project, I will aim to put more time outside of lessons during the production of my magazine as I think it will give me more opportunities to better my product. I also want to create more resources for ...
