Audience Research General

For my general audience research, I made a survey using Google Forms which I then sent to twenty contacts giving me varied responses.

I first questioned my audience in regards to their age and I found that the majority of my audience is 15-years old. This will allow me to cater my product towards them.

In this question, I ask my audience to specify their gender. My predominantly female audience indicates that my artist and cover lines will have to be conventionally more 'feminine' in order to engage them.

I asked my audience if they listen to music regularly and as the answer was 100% yes, I can infer that they will be interested in a music magazine.

This question tells me that although the majority of my audience would purchase a magazine with their favourite artist on it, I will have to create intriguing cover lines in order to attract the remainder of them.

I was unsure as to what genre I wanted my magazine to be therefore I asked my audience. This question allows me to centre my magazine on a genre that my audience prefers. I found that the most popular genre is K-Pop which is closely followed by Alternative/Indie, R&B and Pop. I plan to conduct focused audience research in order to obtain and in depth idea of which genre my audience would prefer to read.

 I asked my audience which artist they preferred and the most popular appear to be Drake (R&B) and BTS (K-Pop). These results show that my audience would prefer an artist who, despite the struggles in their early life, have gained unrivalled popularity through hard work and use their fame to encourage their fans.

The results show that my audience equally like 'Mixtape' and 'Radar'. A mixtape is a compilation of an artists music and is often created by growing artists. I think this title would appeal to my audience, especially those who enjoy BTS and Drake due to the fact that they are growing artists who 'started from the bottom'.

I asked my audience 'Which music magazine cover appeals to you?' in order to get an idea of what type of layout they would prefer. In this question, I asked the participants to choose one of four music magazine covers (Q, Vibe, Billboard and NME) simply based on their preferences. The majority of my audience chose the Billboard magazine cover; I believe they chose this magazine cover due to the vibrant pink background and unique model pose. Compared to the other magazines, Billboard is the neatest in terms of the organisation of cover lines.

From the results of my survey, I can infer the style of magazine my audience would prefer and I can use these findings as the base of my research.

In my focused audience research, I asked my two female participants a series of questions in order to gain an insight of their preferences. Question 1: Name an artist you like from your favourite genre. I asked my participants to name an artist that they liked from their favourite genre so that I could get an idea about the type of artists my target audience would want to see on a magazine front cover. Brief Outline

For my brief, I’ve been tasked with conducting research and producing the front cover of an original music magazine along with a double page spread featuring the artist. During the prelim, I learned how to use Adobe Photoshop to construct my fashion magazine and I enjoyed using the program therefore I am excited to use it for this magazine. I’m also looking forward to developing my Photoshop skills, specifically when it comes to editing the main image and manipulating other aspects of the magazine. In my opinion, there is a greater diversity within music magazines as opposed to fashion magazines thus I think there will be a far more interesting variety of real products to use as prompts and inspiration when I am conducting my research. As this NEA is a time-sensitive project, I will aim to put more time outside of lessons during the production of my magazine as I think it will give me more opportunities to better my product. Exploration of Genre

My chosen genre is Contemporary R&B as I think there is more diversity within this genre as opposed to 'regular' R&B. Contemporary R&B is essentially a fusion of different different genres such as Pop, Soul, Hip-Hop and Electronica with R&B Artists featured: BTS, Taemin, Drake, Bryson Tiller, SZA, The Weeknd, Billie Eilish, blackbear, Tory Lanez and Chase Atlantic These artists share both similarities and differences in the sound of their music, however, they generally fall under the category of (Contemporary) R&B. They are also artists that are popular with 14-18 year olds - my target audience for example. I think that people will find a few of these artists appealing due to their style of music and often interesting lyrics.
